Welcome to SelfRegIt! : A library to help consumers review advertising and make smart choices about health products and services
SelfRegIt! is an independent digital special library with the goal of providing a useful collection of resources focused on advertising self-regulation in the health and medical arena. This library is for consumers, the general public and anyone else who wishes to learn about advertising standards regarding health services, nutritional supplements, medical devices, diet pills and the many other products and services that are available in the commercial realm.
Consumers often think that if a product is advertised, it has undergone review, been tested or is regulated in one way or another. The assumption is often that products we see in magazines, on billboards, on TV or on the Internet must be safe and acceptable. This is not always the case. Many products and services that don't work, make false claims, prey on people's fears, and sometimes even contain ingredients or involve methods that could be potentially harmful, are regularly marketed and sold without consumers being aware of their rights or the information available to them that might help them make an informed decision.
How can the careful and smart consumer protect themselves and know which products or services are okay and which ones are not okay. The answer: RESEARCH. SelfRegIt! is here to provide the tools for that research. A simple check of available free resources on the most problematic topics related to health and medical advertising can help consumers make informed and healthy decisions about when to be skeptical and when to be safe.
